I have become increasingly unhappy with the politicians' involvement in the role of the GP - much of our time is now spent carrying out audits, reaching unnecessary targets to get paid and generally running a small company. I feel very strongly that this has detracted from patient care and the traditional role of the 'family doctor' has been slowly eroded such that I simply could not offer more than 5 minute appointments in order to get through the day. The traditional role of listening, caring, and exploring patient's feelings, relating symptoms to life outside the consulting room (a holistic approach to general wellbeing) is becoming more and more difficult. I therefore decided to resign from the NHS as I could not practice medicine in the way in which I believe patients need and want.
Whilst I was initially a staunch supporter of the NHS I could no longer work under such circumstances, and have decided to offer the same services as before but under the umbrella of the private sector.
At Sussex Medical Chambers it is our intention to bring back traditional values to GP services - to allow time for a friendly holistic approach, and bring private medicine into the reach of many, by keeping prices reasonable and within the reach of many more people.
