According to Ayurvedic principles, people and nature are linked by the five elements - fire, water, air, earth, and ether - which are expressed in the three life forces, the doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Ayurvedic practitioners believe that people get sick when the balance among the doshas is disrupted. To harmonize a person's doshas, massages, affusions, herbal remedies, and diet changes may be prescribed. It is thought that when you understand your doshas, you can make diet and lifestyle changes that will help you live a healthier, longer, and happier life. Many people in India are still treated according to this healing tradition.
If you are interested in this type of treatment, choose a practitioner who combines Western medical training with Ayurvedic training. Or perhaps your regular physician would consider using an Ayurvedic consultant
