Frequently Asked Questions

Q:

Who can see a Private GP?
Anyone is entitled to see a private GP for a one-off fee. We will soon be setting up a 'family insurance scheme' for 24 hour cover of all your GP needs.

Q: What sort of problems can a Private GP deal with?
A private GP will be able to deal with the whole spectrum of illnesses and problems. Many problems require a simple one off consultation, or a few consultations per year. However, ongoing illnesses that require regular review may become expensive, although you always have the option to transfer back to your NHS GP. Private services are intended as an adjunct to your NHS GP service and not a total replacement for it so it is strongly recommended that you stay registered with a NHS practice.
Q: Can you issue NHS prescriptions?
No! Patients on large amounts of expensive drugs may find private medicine expensive. (Having said that, many courses of drugs are considerably cheaper than the current prescription charge! eg a course of amoxycillin costs around £2.00)
Q: Can I see my NHS GP for some things and a Private GP for others?
Yes! A private GP will be able to spend a longer time than your NHS GP will usually be able to spend. If you require more time to talk, to look at multiple problems, stress related problems, a complex set of symptoms, a less hurried environment, personal or relationship issues, or just reassurance or a second opinion, private GP services are ideal.
Q: Will a Private GP liaise with my NHS GP?
Normally your NHS GP will be kept informed about important clinical information. Alternatively, you may be seen in complete confidence.
Q: Will my GP mind?
Your NHS GP should see your visit to Sussex Medical Chambers as complementary to his/her services, not opposed to them. It is often difficult to sort out problems in the time available in a NHS surgery, it is hoped that NHS GPs will see the need for private GP services.
Q: Might the costs spiral out of control?
Provided that you have normal entitlement to NHS services, the usual range of tests under NHS arrangements are freely available. Similarly if a referral is necessary this can be either on the NHS or privately according to your wishes. If private referral, investigations, further consultations etc are required you will be fully informed of the costs before proceeding and, indeed may be recommended to go and see your NHS GP.
Q: What if I need the practice nurse, district nurse, health visitors etc?
Provided that you have normal entitlement to NHS services, you are entitled to a NHS district nurse, health visitor, social worker etc. Sussex Medical Chambers has a full range of practice nurses on site and their consultation time must be paid for.
